Detection of common food adulterants

Science Club programme at Udbhas was on identification of food adulterants in the kitchen by hands on experiments conducted by Subhalakshmi Nag (Rotary family). She had shown: 1) Starch as adulterant in diluted milk to maintain its density. 2) Metanil yellow which is carcinogenic, addition to laddu, jalebi, biriyani etc. 3) Rhodamine B which is also carcinogenic, used to polish red chilly, tomato, sweet potatoes etc. 4) Presence of Argimone seeds in mustard seeds 5) Presence of papaya seeds in black pepper. 6) Sugar mixed in honey 7) Vanaspati mixed with ghee 8) Test for iodised salt. She also talked on contribution of Dr. Dilip Mahalanabish in treatment of Cholera and other types of dehydration using ORS. President Paromita, Sikha Mukherji, Debnath Chaudhuri (Rotary family), & Aditi Nag Chaudhuri were present. Club distributed snacks to the kids.
