Sundarban Mangrove Plantation at Kumirmari, Gosaba Block

Ecologically fragile Sundarbans region is losing it mangrove cover due to over exploitation, altered hydrology, pollution and natural calamity. Rotary Club of Calcutta Pointers (RCCP), undertook a project on 19th Aug to plant 1,500 mangrove saplings in Kumirmari, Gosaba, which is 75 kms from Kolkata. This is the second year in running that RCCP is planting mangrove saplings there. Rotary Club of Calcutta Metropolitan also partnered with RCCP in this efforts and donated 1,000 saplings for planting. Around 30 women from the village helped in planting the saplings. Packets of assorted vegetable seed were distributed to them for their kitchen gardens. It is a small effort to help in ecological stabilization of Sundarbans and protection from cyclones. RCCP and RCCM are grateful to NGO Purbasha Eco Helpline Society (PEHS) for providing local logistics and support.
